Necklace snatched,
too much gold.
Everywhere the grass is baked
into blond topknots.
As the sun sets on plastic tents,
we cross eroded streets,
polluted river,
trembling with unknowing
as evening and temperatures fall.
This rocky bowl cups
six million lives on unsteady legs —
none so sure-footed as
the dog crossing the onramp
in search of shade.
